Lattice Semiconductor launches 60GHz module with beam steering

With the use of microwave bands and in particular 60GHz usage expected to mushroom in the coming years, Lattice Semiconductor have launched a new module, their GigaRay™ MOD65412 60 GHz module set.

This module set provides the baseband, RF and phased antenna elements required to provide a 60GHz link. The module utilizes Lattice’s SiBEAM technology that has been used before, but in this case advanced to provide the basis of the GigaRay MOD65412 60 GHz module set.

With design expertise in the 6OGHz region being limited, this offering will enable developers of RF systems to quickly utilize this proven technology to provide a reliable link.

It is anticipated that there will be many applications for the MOD65412 60 GHz module set ranging from small cell wireless backhaul, to fixed wireless broadband, metro Wi-Fi and smart city applications. It could even be used to provide the main data links within a localized wireless network.

The GigaRay MOD65412 60 GHz module set enables operators and service providers to offer 5G-class services in within licence-free spectrum.

The GigaRay MOD65412 provides up to 37dBm EIRP with a steerable antenna gain of around 22dB. The module has been designed so that the power consumption of the transceiver module, together with any additional base band requirements can be powered by Power over Ethernet, enabling easy interfacing and power supply.

In operation the Lattice GigaRay MOD65412 is able to provide range of 200 metres for a 1Gbps TCP/IP throughput and a range of 300 metres for a 300 Mbps TCP/IP throughput. Also the antenna has a ±45° horizontal steering range.

The aim is to provide a module that can be easily utilized with the minimum of development by any application company.

TO provide the support to help developers, Lattice has launched a companion evaluation and development kit. This incorporates an integrated baseband and RF module set as well as an Intel Core i5 dual core processor, 64GB SSD, and 4GB RAM. The operating system is Linux Fedora 19 and the it comes with evaluation software and performance measurement utilities pre-installed.
