Protect OLEDs and flexible screens from vapour diffusion

The latest generation of flexible light-emitting diodes (OLED) displays, and other optoelectronic components are extremely susceptible to degradation from both moisture and oxygen, securing proper protection against these vapours is a decisive factor in achieving a long working life. This is a major hurdle in the introduction of flexible OLEDs into the commercial market.

This problem is typically resolved by the use of polymeric substrates with multi-layered barrier coatings comprising alternating organic/inorganic layers but it is critical that the vapour permeability of each layer and structure needs to be accurately determined and controlled - and that's where Versaperm comes in.

Versaperm is a specialist in vapour permeability technology and has developed techniques and instrumentation for measuring the coatings both individually and as compound structures. Independent measurements are also produced for water vapour and oxygen permeability. The equipment can also be used for detecting the prevalence of the pinholes that commonly are produced by current manufacturing techniques.

The Versaperm equipment offers an advanced, fast and efficient way to test and measure vapour permeability of alternative plastic barrier films along with the sealants used for permanent closure. The system is simple to use, fast and extremely accurate.

Results are typically accurate in the Parts Per Million (PPM) range (PPB in some cases and can be produced for several vapour depositions, material samples, screens or enclosures all at the same time. It can also measure them under a wide range of environmental conditions.

Optionally, the system can also work with virtually any other common gas or vapour, as well as water vapour and CO2.

Versaperm also offers a laboratory service for companies that only need to test samples on an irregular basis.

Tick-Tock: What Your Engineers Could be Spending Time Doing if They Weren’t Stuck Designing a Display?
As soon as any design project is embarked upon, the clock starts ticking. The length of time needed to develop a system can impinge heavily on its commercial success. Windows of opportunity could be missed if it takes too long to complete, with products from rival companies gaining greater market share.
