Atmel and Wasion forge ahead with smart metering

Atmel and energy metering business, Wasion Group, are to develop smart electricity meters and data concentrators using Atmel's power line communication (PLC) solutions.

The partners will collaborate on product developments based on the Atmel ATPL210, ATPL220 and SAM4SP32A, a single-chip PRIME compliant system-on-chip solution based on an ARM Cortex-M4 processor-based microcontroller (MCU) core.

Atmel and Wasion expect the collaboration will help to drive adoption of standards-compliant smart metering in worldwide markets based on field-proven and cost-effective PRIME narrowband PLC technology.

Wang Xuexin, General Manager of Overseas Division, Wasion Group, said: “Through our collaboration, we will be able to accelerate development, field testing and roll-out of smart metering solutions.”

“China is the fastest growing market for smart meters with some of the most demanding requirements and specifications," added Kourosh Boutorabi, Sr. Director of Smart Energy, Atmel. "We are pleased to have an opportunity to meet these challenges through our close collaboration with Wasion Group.”

According to market research firm Pike Research, 17.9 million smart meters have been deployed since Q2 2012, with China as the largest driver.
