Samsung pictures its future with the S9

Even before the doors opened at the Fira Gran Via for Mobile World Congress 2018, Samsung launched its latest S9 flagship smartphone.

The two versions of the S9 are the S9 itself and the larger and more fully featured S9+. With reports asking what more smartphones can do, Samsung has focussed on improving the camera and adding a host more facilities to this.

As consumers are communicating far more with pictures and videos, this approach makes a whole lot of sense. The major push for VR some years ago appealed to a relatively limited sector of the market - after all who is going to walk around with a huge headset on for most of the day, but pictures and videos reflect everyday life.

After the disastrous launch of the Note 7 ], the S8 launch was delayed last year until after MWC. This year, Samsung are back with their launch here.

The new S9 series features a totally redesigned camera with a new dual aperture lens and this provides improved low light images and supports “super slo-mo” video which a lot of people will find fun.

Another new feature is the AR Emoji which enables users to create an emoji that looks and even sounds like them. The camera uses machine learning to create a 3D model from a 2D image.

Both of the devices, S9 and S9+ include the Samsung “super speed dual pixel” 12 MP camera and then on the S9+ there is a second 12 MP camera telephoto lens.

Apart from the camera the S9 and S9+ include stero speakers with AKG acoustics and Dolby Atmos support. The S9 has a 5.8 inch quad HD screen and the S9+ has a 6.2 quad HD screen.

Both devices will start to hit the shops from mid-March 2018 in black, grey, blue and lilac.
