Bandgap Voltage Reference Tutorial

- the bandgap technique is used to provide a precision voltage reference in many circuits where temperature stability and low noise performance are required.

Another form of voltage reference is known as a bandgap voltage reference.

This form of configuration is widely sued in integrated circuits because it provides a higher level of performance than that which can be obtained from a Zener / voltage reference diode.

Bandgap basics

It is well known that the common voltage reference or Zener diode is temperature dependent, and in many circuit applications a stable voltage reference is required.

The approach that is taken in most integrated circuits is to use a bandgap voltage reference source.

This source operates by cancelling the negative temperature dependence of a PN junction with a positive temperature dependence from a circuit called a Proportional-To-Absolute-Temperature or PTAT circuit.
